A large majority of all monies wagered at Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino’s pari-mutuel windows and slot machines go right back to the players themselves, as they cash their winning tickets and play the slot machines & tables.

At the end of each operating year, after paying all expenses, the DRA distributes excess profits to the City and to local area charitable organizations. The City receives 40% of the excess profits, area charitable organizations receive 30% of the profits, and the Association retains 30% of its profits for capital improvements, debt retirement, and reserve funds.

In addition to the distribution of excess profits, the City of Dubuque receives lease payments and 1/2% of both pari-mutuel handle and casino win. In 2006, the DRA announced a distribution of $3,378,000 to area charitable organizations and a distribution of $4,504,000 to the City of Dubuque. The DRA also paid $9,485,140 in lease payments and $214,619 in gaming taxes to the City for a total payment of $14,364,551 for the year.

WHERE THE MONEY COMES FROM/GOES TO
While many know the Dubuque Racing Association makes great things happen, few are aware of its status as a 501(c)4 not-for-profit corporation and that it operates the Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino.

Every year, in accordance with its lease with the City of Dubuque, the Dubuque Racing Association distributes millions of dollars to the City of Dubuque. And every year, major goals are met, projects are finished, and dreams come true. In fact, because of this funding, city projects slated for tomorrow can be executed today.

From renovating parks and enhancing the Town Clock Plaza to helping build America’s River, the City of Dubuque can now implement a number of municipal and community projects, thanks to this relationship.

In addition to the distribution of excess profits, the City of Dubuque receives lease payments and 1% of both pari-mutuel handle and casino win. In 2006, the DRA announced a distribution of $3,378,000 to area charitable organizations and a distribution of $4,504,000 to the City of Dubuque. The DRA also paid $9,485,140 in lease payments and $375,411 in gaming taxes to the City for a total payment of $14,364,551 for the year.

Capital projects funded with DRA distributions include the development of the tunnel from Five Flags to the Holiday Inn Five Flags Hotel, the new look of Town Clock Plaza, a runway extension at the Dubuque Regional Airport, new and upgraded pools and parks including a skate park, many industrial park improvements such as the new Eagle Window project, and much more.

In addition, funds from DRA have been used for everyday operational needs, such as upgrading the police department’s computers, dredging storm sewers, and purchasing a new fire truck.

Recently, the Heritage Trail was extended to the Mississippi riverfront; a riverwalk was constructed at America’s River; and at the Town Clock Plaza new lights, trees, landscaping, and more were provided with funds from the DRA and Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino.

It’s all about making Dubuque a better place to live, as the dreams for the future are realized today.
